Beter Bed Holding N.V. started off initially, in the 1980's, as a retail organisation specialising in bedroom furnishings. In 1990 the company started up its own production facilities in the Netherlands under the name of Bedden & Bedden B.V. and in 1994 this subsidiary started up production in Poland. Presently 27% of sales is manufactured by the company itself. In December 1996 73% of Beter Bed Holding's shares were floated onto the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, yielding 9.6 million Dutch Guilders, after which in January 1997 the company acquired the Dutch bedroom retail-chain Dormael Slaapkamers B.V. financed with money from the floatation. This new subsidiary is operating in the higher segment of the retail business.
