Schuitema sees strong rise in FY net: Q1 net rises 20,2%
Schuitema said it expects net profit for the full year will show a "strong" rise from the year earlier. The company reported a 20.2% increase in net profit for the first 16 weeks of the year compared to EUR 8.1 mln from the year-earlier period. First-quarter sales rose 43.3% to EUR 835.2 mln, largely due to the acquisition of the A&P group and the "successful" development of sales at C1000, Schuitema said, adding that excluding A&P, sales rose 7.2%.

C1000 has had enough of takeovers
Schuitema, the Dutch supermarket group which owns C1000, will not take over any companies or look for alliances with other chains in the coming years, now that merger talks with Dutch food wholesaler Sperwer have definitively failed. C1000 and Sperwer also decided to end their joint venture in the field of buying because this would lead to too much fragmentation.

Sperwer discontinues collaboration with Schuitema purchase division
Sperwer and Schuitema have ended their collaboration. Following the failure of the two companies' merger talks in January of this year, Sperwer will leave Trade Service Nederland (TSN), Schuitema's purchase division, on April 1. The two companies have announced this. Sperwer now is urgently seeking another partner and states to be in the final stages of negotiations with two other purchase organisations.

A&P spoils Schuitema results
The success of the C1000 supermarkets in the year 2000 was not reflected in the annual results of Dutch parent company Schuitema. Due to the takeover of the loss-making A&P supermarkets and one-off costs related to the acquisition, the Dutch supermarket group generated net profit of EUR 29.6 mln over the year 2000, virtually the same as in 1999.

Schuitema and Sperwer merger fails
Schuitema and Sperwer, the two Dutch supermarket groups, announced yesterday that merger talks between the two companies failed because they could not come to an agreement about how much each of the companies was worth. Sperwer chairman Mr Lagerweij said that the merger talks were '80 percent completed'.

Schuitema and BP discontinue filling station supermarket
Schuitema and UK oil company BP are winding up their joint supermarket project at filling stations. BP announced on Tuesday that it would start up its own international shop concept. Schuitema is disappointed about the trial being discontinued as turnover and profitability were satisfactory. BP and Schuitema have shops called C1000 Quick Shops in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Oostzaan. The Schuitema name will be removed from 1 April onwards.

Schuitema to sell Achmea products in supermarkets
Schuitema, a unit of Royal Ahold, is to sell insurance and banking products offered by Achmea Group's FBTO. The offering of 23 savings, investment and insurance products will start at Schuitema's C1000 store in Spijkenisse this week, the companies said in a joint statement. Trials in additional stores are set for the spring of next year, while the project may be further expanded in 2002 following an evaluation of its success.

Schuitema reported net profit of EUR 21.1 mln over the first nine months of this year, virtually unchanged from the year-earlier period. The stagnation in earnings growth was attributed to provisions made for the acquisition of sector peer A&P Groep and higher selling costs.

Schuitema's investment allows the company to support its logistics and commercial operations in Holland. Armature's software and professional services were chosen ahead of SAP, IMI, Oracle/Retek and JDA.

Schuitema reported on Wednesday net profit for the first-half of 2000 remained flat at EUR 12.9 mln. Turnover increased 7% from EUR 972.7 mln to EUR 1,043.0 mln. Operating income increased 3% from EUR 16.7 mln to EUR 17.2 mln. Earnings per share for the first-half of 2000 increased 0% to EUR 54.00, compared with earnings per share of EUR 53.80 for the first-half of 1999.

NMa okay's Schuitema acquisition
The Dutch competition authority NMa on Tuesday approved the acquisition of the 129 A&P outlets by Ahold subsidiary Schuitema. The acquisition gives Schuitema a 14.7% share in the Dutch retail food market and takes Ahold's share to 42%. Ahold has a 73% stake in Schuitema.

Schuitema and Sperwer reported plans to merge their operations. The combine will control 16% of the Dutch grocery market through supermarket chains such as Plusmarkt, Garantmarkt, Kopak and C-1000. Schuitema will take over all Sperwer shares in exchange for new Schuitema shares.

Schuitema is investing NLG 30 mln in a radical expansion of its distribution centre in Gieten. The centre's floor area will more than double to 26,000 m2 and the number of staff increase by 100 to 400 in 2005. Schuitema said the expansion was necessary to meet rising sales.

Schuitema sales up 4%
Schuitema announced on Monday that sales at its supermarkets increased in 1999 by 4% to over NLG 5.1 bn, compared to NLG 4.9 bn for full year 1998. Schuitema said that its market share increased from 11.0% in 1998 to 11.4% in 1999. Growth was mainly due to the development of Schuitema's C1000 formula, the company said.

Schuitema interested in A&P chain
Schuitema, said it was taking over the A&P store chain from Germany's Tengelmann. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Schuitema will acquire 125 A&P stores and Maxis hypermarkets, boosting its market share in Holland from 11.4% to 14.7%. Schuitema will finance the takeover with new shares and bank loans. Tengelmann put the A&P stores up for sale in September because it considered their Dutch market share of 3.3% too small.

Schuitema sees futher profit rise
Schuitema said on Wednesday it expected another clear rise in net profits in 1999. Earlier on Wednesday, the majority-owned unit of Dutch retail group Ahold said its 1998 net profits had risen by 14.7% to NLG 60.2 mln. Schuitema's 1998 turnover rose by 10% to NLG 3.8 bn, which was in line with a previous forecast.

Schuitema talks with new partners
Schuitema is in talks with the new partners in its TSN purchasing combine about a variety of different alliances. Supermarket groups Boon, Codis and Prisma, which joined the TSN combine in January, are talking to Schuitema about a range of projects covering logistics, sjop formats and own brand goods.

Vendex finalises Kassa takesover
The Vendex Food group has finalised the take over of the 12-outlet strong Kassa supermarket chain from Schuitema. The takeover increases Vendex Food's share of the food retail market to 12%. The outlets will be closed until May 12, to be reopened under the name Basismarkt. With the take over, the number of Basismarkt outlets totals 167.

The Vendex Food group is taking over the 12-outlet strong Kassa supermarket chain from Schuitema. The takeover increases Vended Food's share of the food retail market to 12%. The transaction does not include the distribution centre in Steenwijk, which Schuitema intends to sell separately.
