Amstelland has EUR 125-150 mln for acquisitions, eyes family businesses - CFO
Amstelland has some EUR 125-150 mln in available funds "possibly to use for acquisitions", said chief financial officer John Schoonhoven, adding that Amstelland would be interested in "small family businesses." Schoonhoven estimated that at current financing levels Amstelland would be able to "cough up" a takeover sum including goodwill of around EUR 60 mln from own funds.

Turnover increased 15% from NLG 2,333.2 mln to NLG 2,672.9 mln. Operating income increased 43% from NLG 121.7 mln to NLG 174.3 mln.

NBM-Amstelland buys timber merchant
NBM-Amstelland announced on Friday it is taking over timber merchant Woltman Beheer. Woltman Beheer has outlets in Heerenveen and Leeuwarden and employs 30 people. The company is expected to turnover some NLG 16 mln this year, NBM-Amstelland said. The acquisition fit in NBM-Amstelland's strategy to expand in trade and industry, the company said. Financial details were not disclosed.

NBM-Amstelland said it sold its concrete factory Gerard Welkenhuysen in Genk, Belgium to Struyk Verwo Groep, a unit of CRH PLC, for an undisclosed sum. The concrete factory serves the sewer and drainage market. No job losses will result due to the sale of the factory, the company said.

NBM-Amstelland to reorganise rail unit
NBM-Amstelland announced on Thursday that it would carry out a radical reorganisation of its unit NBM Rail in order to improve the unit's quality-level and to make it more competitive. The operation will result in the loss of jobs, but the company did not indicate how many yet. Currently, NBM Rail employs 450 people. The company also said that it will terminate its activities in Belgium, Germany and the UK in due course.

NBM-Amstelland said on Friday it has finalised the acquisitions of Meddelbrink & Van Breukelen and Zegers Installatietechniek. The two companies co-operate already for a number of years, NBM-Amstelland said. The acquisitions have combined turnover of NLG 35 mln and employs 130 people. Both companies will be incorporated in NBM-Amstelland's unit Verkeer, Telecom & Installaties under the name NBM-Amstelland Petrol Stations. Financial details were not disclosed.

With the merger, also the commercial activities will be combined, which will have a positive effect on yield of the companies. NBM-Amstelland said on Friday that its chairman Andre Blaar is to step-down for health reasons. Baar will be succeeded by J. van Bussel. Baar is to join the supervisory board in 2000. Baar, who asked the board to look for a successor last spring, was accused of money laundering and forgery in December last year in connection with the fraud scandal at the Amsterdam stock exchange. Baar denied any involvement, but is due to appear in court next spring. Baar has headed NBM-Amstelland since 1990.

NBM-Amstelland is to acquire the Dutch building activities of Wilma International. The move will create the biggest builder of housing and utilities in the Netherlands. The take over price was not disclosed. NBM-Amstelland will finance the takeover through the issue of 7.5 million new shares. Under the deal, Wilma International will receive three million of the new NBM-Amstelland shares, aquivalent to a 6% stake.
