Blydenstein and Hatefa discontinue talks
Blydenstein-Willink, the Dutch manufacturer and distributor of home furnishings, and Dutch textiles printing company Hatefa decided 'by mutual agreement' to discontinue talks about a possible merger of the textile printing business Lakatex BV (a subsidiary of Blydenstein-Willink) and Hatefa BV. The parties failed to come to an agreement about the conditions of a merger.

Blydenstein-Willink is seeking partners
Blydenstein-Willink, the Dutch manufacturer and distributor of home furnishings, incurred losses of EUR 172,000 in 2000. Turnover rose by over 2% to EUR 46.3 mln in the past year. Blydenstein-Willink did a study in the autumn of 2000 in which every operating company was carefully analysed. The study concluded that all activities offer sufficient perspectives provided that changes are made in the field of collaboration.

Turnover increased 2% from EUR 23.5 mln to EUR 24.0 mln. Operating income fell from an operating profit of EUR 0.2 mln for the first-half of 1999 to an operating loss of EUR 1.0 mln for the first-half of 2000.

Blijdenstein-Willink reported on Monday net profit for 1999 fell to to EUR 62,000, compared with net profit of EUR 841,000 the company booked in the comparible period of 1998. A fire at the company's main customer depressed sales. Turnover decreased 6% from EUR 48.2 mln to EUR 45.2 mln. Operating income fell 44% from EUR 1.6 mln to EUR 0.9 mln. Earnings per share for 1999 fell EUR 0.46 to EUR 0.04, compared with earnings per share of EUR 0.50 for 1998.

Rumours drive Blydestein price
The price of shares in textiles group Blydenstein-Willink has risen sharply during the last two sessions of the Amsterdam stock exchange. Traders said the price was boosted by rumours of a merger, and pointed to Ten Cate which recently said it was seeking a partner. Blydestein closed 17% higher on Monday, after gaining 27% on Friday. Volume in the issue was heavy on both days.

Blydenstein-Willink, manufacturer of window coverings and technical textiles, issued a profit warning on Tuesday. The company said it will book a lower net profit for the first-half of 1999 compared with the NLG 0.9 mln the company booked for the first-half 1998, mainly due to a fire at the company's biggest customer BW Industrial (technical textiles) earlier this year.

The company aims to expand its production capacity at its technical textiles division by 25%. The company also plans to buy a new coatings machine for its interior fabrics unit Lakatex.

The company booked earnings per share of NLG 0.18, compared with a loss per share of NLG 1.76 for 1996. For 1998, management forecast further improvement of results. The increase in sales last year was generated entirely from venetian blinds and technical textiles, which range from sailcloth to cable coverings.
