Philips CEO outlines vision for reshaping Philips in 2002 and beyond
Gerard Kleisterlee, President and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Philips Electronics on Thursday expressed his ambition to further increase the focus on reshaping Philips during 2002 and beyond, and building the technology core of the company around displays, connectivity and storage. Mr. Kleisterlee was giving a keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the first ever Philips executive to do so.

Philips agrees to sell its Fax Business Unit to Group SAGEM of France
Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands and Groupe SAGEM of France announced on Thursday an agreement on the sale of Philips' business unit fax to SAGEM. The transaction is expected to close in the next few months and is subject to customary approvals. The main activities of Philips' business unit fax are located in Vienna, where about 350 employees are active in research and development, manufacturing, marketing and service.

European Telecom PLC of the United Kingdom has acquired from Philips Electronics N.V. parts of Philips' unit for industrial operations in the field of mobile telephony in Le Mans, France. Under this agreement, which became effective January 1, 2002, a total of 597 employees have been transferred from Philips to European Telecom.

Philips gives boost to two local suppliers
Philips Electronics Singapore, a subsidiary of leading Dutch electronics firm Royal Philips Electronics, yesterday reached a deal to share the company's production technology and quality control system with suppliers Yeakin Plastic Industry and Amtek Engineering. Metal processing company Amtek will utilise Philips' patented technology for coating steam iron sole plates. Yeakin will implement the Netherlands-based firm's quality assurance scheme in order to reduce the number of factory rejects.

Bank staff bought Endemol shares after Boonstra-order
The controversial trade in shares in Dutch entertainment company Endemol by former chairman Cor Boonstra of Dutch electronics group Philips did not do staff of Belgian bank KBC any harm. Philips axes 124 jobs at LG Philips Displays
At a reorganisation of the Dutch activities of monitor manufacturer LG Philips Displays in Eindhoven, 102 permanent jobs and 24 temporary jobs out of the total 450 jobs will be cut. Philips to cut 400 jobs at Cean
Philips is to cut 400 jobs at its production plant in Caen, France, according to a union source. Philips has, like its rivals, been suffering from a sudden drop in semiconductor sales since the start of this year after an exceptional year 2000. In July, Philips chairman Gerard Kleisterlee announced that 3,000 to 4,000 jobs would have to be cut during the second half of this year, but did not specify the sites involved.

Philips to release DVD recorder 1st time in Korean market
Philips Electronics said it will launch a new digital video disk (DVD) recorder for the first time on the domestic market next Tuesday. The DVDR1000 can record and edit pictures and voice signals from digital broadcasting and digital camcorders. The product, which can store digital pictures for up to four hours, converts analog pictures of existing analog TVs and video recorder cassettes (VCRs) into high-definition digital pictures.

Philips completes acquisition of Marconi Medical Systems
Royal Philips Electronics announced on Monday that it has completed the acquisition of the medical systems business of Marconi plc, for a total purchase price of USD 1.1 bn. Marconi Medical Systems has 5,000 employees operating in the medical imaging market in over 100 countries, specializing in computed tomography, magnetic resonance and nuclear medicine systems.

Mobile handsets agreements between Philips and China Electr. Corp. signed
Royal Philips Electronics and China Electronics Corporation (CEC) on Monday have signed in Beijing definitive agreements on the transfer of Philips' mobile handset activities. Net income Philips third quarter 2001 loss of EUR 799 mln
Net Income of Royal Philips Electronics in the third quarter amounted to a loss of EUR 799 mln (a loss of EUR 0.62 per share) compared to a profit of EUR 2,066 mln (EUR 1.58 per share) in the corresponding period of 2000. Income from unconsolidated companies came to a loss of EUR 350 mln. Income was negatively impacted by after tax charges of EUR 346 mln (a loss of EUR 0.27 per share), EUR 125 mln of which was in unconsolidated companies.

Philips awaited forrestructuring update
Philips is set to announce third-quarter results on Tuesday, and the focus will be on the success to date of its restructuring plans, which included cutting about 11,000 jobs. Philips Hasselt wants to limit redundancies
Philips Hasselt, a Belgian branch of the Dutch electronics giant, is holding an extraordinary works council on 17 October to answer the unions' questions about the company's planned restructuring plan. Philips announced in August that 600 of the 2,048 jobs will have to go. This figure was confirmed at the works council. Philips will also cut 140 temping staff. At the meeting, senior management of Philips Semiconductors presented actions that have been taken to manage the global downturn in the Semiconductor industry, and explained that the division is well positioned when the industry would turn around.

Philips warned of a further deterioration in the performance of its semiconductor side, setting aside funds for cuts in staff and capacity. Sales at the chip division were expected to fall 17-18% in the current three months to September compared with the immediately preceding quarter, it said. Philips reported on Monday it was to scrap a further 100 jobs at its semiconductor plant in Stadskanaal because of falling worldwide demand. Philips cuts 210 jobs at its Maua plant, in Brazil
The Brazilian subsidiary of Philips, the Dutch electronics goods manufacturer, has cut 210 jobs at its Maua plant, in the state of Sao Paulo, according to the local trade union. The workers will on Tuesday meet to decide whether or not to accept the company's proposal. The company has confirmed plans to cut 180 jobs at the plant, which employs a total of 1,110 workers. The reason for the cuts is the strong fall in light bulb sales caused by the government's power rationing programme.

Philips to launch Eurobond Benchmark Issue
Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands intends to launch a Eurobond ("the Notes") with a short to medium-term maturity. The proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes. Philips chip profit falls 10%
Philips said on Tuesday the weaker US economy has cut into its chip unit profit which will be 10% lower in the first quarter. Philips also said it expects that its component and consumer electronics divisions will report "negative income from operations" in the period. Philips said the profit fall will comes even as sales of semiconductors were expected to be 7% higher compared with the first quarter in 2000.

Philips warns on slowdown
Philips on Tuesday warned that profits would be hit by a weakening US economy and a slowdown in demand for mobile phones and personal computers. The company said first-quarter operating income from its semiconductor division would be 10% down on the same period last year. Its components and consumer electronics units, the latter including its mobile phone division, would post a loss, it said.

Philips and MJI announce measures to strengthen Marantz business
Philips and Marantz Japan. (MJI) jointly announce that MJI intends to buy from Philips the Marantz trademark and the European and American sales organizations. The transaction is due to take effect in the coming months. Philips launches factory in east Germany
Philips wants to build a microchip factory in the east German town of Erfurt. The project involves an investment of several hundred million guilders. This would be the first time that Philips has invested such a large sum in east Germany. The new factory will create jobs for 300 people. Philips said that it is still in 'intensive negotiations' with the state of Thuringen, where Erfurt is located. In west Germany, Philips has two microchip factories, in Hamburg and Boblingen.

E Ink draws cash infusion from Philips

A dispute between Czech hairdresser Marketa Regecova and Philips Electronics, over a 53-acre patch of land on which the Dutch electronics giant is close to completing a cutting-edge TV-screen factory, has thrown into clearer relief the limitations on the Czech government's ability to buy land. Ms. Regecova's initial refusal to sell her land and subsequent raising of her asking price to just under USD 400,000, has led Czech officials to examine amendments to current investment legislation under which property owners would be forced to sell in instances where projects are eligible for investment incentives.

Philips Semiconductors on Wednesday announced a new process technology aimed at producing high performance chips for next generation mobile products at costs well below those of competing technologies. Philips announces USD 68 m investment
The Brazilian subsidiary of Phillips, the Dutch electronics goods manufacturer, announced plans to invest USD 68 mln in two production lines in the city of Manaus, in the northern state of Amazonas, during 2001. The production lines will produce 29-inch television screens and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for mobile handsets and will create 2,100 jobs.

Philips to replace old logo this year
Philips will subject its old logo to changes, after fifty years of service. The company plans to come up with a new logo which radiates the identity of the electronics group in a better way than the old, somewhat stuffy logo. This does not mean that all references to the old logo are to disappear. Gerard Kleisterlee, soon to be Philips' new chairman, said that the stars and the shield will remain.

Farewell to Cor Boonstra after record year at Philips
Philips has upwardly adjusted aims for the next few years. At yesterday's presentation of the annual report, it emerged that growth, profitability and shareholders value will have to be improved further. The group is aiming at an average turnover growth of over 10% per year, while operating profit should amount to 10% of turnover, compared with a current 8%.

Philips and Agilent receive Hart-Scott-Rodino request for information
Philips Electronics and Agilent Technologies,. announced that a second request for information has been received from the Department of Justice in connection with the pending acquisition by Philips of Agilent's Healthcare Solutions Group. The US second request has the effect of extending the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act until 30 calendar days after both parties comply with the request.

US authorities want additional information of Philips
The acquisition of the US Healthcare Solutions Group by Philips has not yet been finalised. The US department of justice wants to obtain additional information on the transaction, which will delay the acquisition by at least a month. Philips announced last year that it would acquire HSG for USD 1.7 bn.

SHL TeleMedicine announced a cooperation agreement with Philips Medical on Monday, aimed at developing new cardiology market areas in Europe. Philips is moving its headquarters to the Breitnertoren office block, in Amsterdam in July. The move will involve 350 Philips employees who are already working in the nearby Rembrandt Tower, plus another 100 workers from Eindhoven. Philips announces capital gains
Philips has warned that it could register exceptional capital gains of EUR 2.2 bn for the fourth quarter of 2000. The capital gain, which does not correspond to an increase in liquidity, is due to the revaluation of the group's assets in financial operations: the merger of its IS subsidiary Origin with Atos of France, as well as from the merger of Seagram with French conglomerate Vivendi.
